John started his career in social work on the west coast, working with the adolescent population with individuals who have moderate to severe psychiatric/emotional/behavioral difficulties. He developed an interest in working with individuals with dementia and cognitive challenges. He wrote and implemented a treatment program for Early-Onset Schizophrenia. This program developed national exposure and interest and became the first nationally-promoted residential program for EarlyOnset Schizophrenia in North America, and has been duplicated in other residential and hospital environments worldwide.

John spent a lot of his early career promoting awareness and education concerning Early-Onset Schizophrenia, speaking and teaching at various events and symposiums throughout the United States to families, communities and Medical Organizations. He later moved into business development in Healthcare and Financial services and has spent much of his life ‘on the road.’ In 2006 he had an 0pportunity to relocate back to Rochester with his wife, Meredith, and 4 children, where he currently resides.

Kevin and his wife, Candy, lived in Naples, Florida for 10 years, where three of their four children were born. He was recruited to the Kevin Watkins Familyinsurance industry by a colleague who felt his personality would benefit people with needs. The insurance industry became a big part of their lives. He evaluated peoples’ risks, working with property and casualty, and life products, and later began to underwrite Long Term Care insurance as people were beginning to plan for their futures. He started two agencies, then bought a third. In his last three years before selling his third agency, he was ranked in the top 10%, top 5% & then top 1% nationally out of the more than 12,500 Allstate agencies in the U.S. at the time. Kevin’s success can be accredited to his kind nature and his genuine desire to help individuals and families with their needs. He feels very at home meeting with people and discussing their needs, a trait that has been very helpful in his continued success with Caring Hearts of Rochester. Kevin returned to Rochester in 2006 to introduce their young children to snow and to be closer to his extended family.

After having returned to Rochester from their careers in other states, John and Kevin reconnected. Alzheimer’s had afflicted both of their families, and they had both experienced and witnessed the challenges associated with the role of being a caregiver. Kevin’s and John’s collective experiences complemented their desire to work with families and individuals in need. They founded Caring Hearts of Rochester and have since been able work in a capacity that has become a passion for them. They have trained with Senior Care Certification programs and have received certifications and designations earned through education, study and experience in the Elderly and Geriatric Care Profession.

Kevin and John are active volunteers with the Alzheimer’s Association and the Parkinson’s Foundation. They are both active in other community and church organizations and have developed a business philosophy of “giving back.” Kevin, John and the core staff at Caring Hearts of Rochester are certified through the Alzheimer’s Association as trainers, facilitators and teachers. They are greatly involved in community awareness, and in educating and training professionals and families concerning Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. In addition to their teaching and training, they facilitate weekly and monthly Support Groups for caregivers and persons with these diseases, present on dementia-related topics throughout the Greater Rochester Community, and work hand-in-hand with the Alzheimer’s Association, supporting various trade shows and health fairs held in Upstate New York.
